A survey based on athletic participation at the High School level in the 2016-17 school year conducted by The National Federation of State High School Associations revealed an astonishing 7,963,535 student participation in sports/athletics which is a 101% increase compared to the 1971-72 school year when the association started its surveys.
We should be Texas proud because we lead all states with the highest total of high school sports/athletic participants at 834,558. However, as per the National Eye Institute, someone visits the hospital every 13 minutes due to a sports-related eye injury!
The leading cause of eye injuries in children 14 and under is baseball; and basketball in ages 15 to 24 year-olds.
Protective Eye Wear (Sports Goggles), May Prevent 90% of Sports-related Injuries!
Also, contact lenses are better than eyeglasses for sports for the following reasons:
- Better compatibility with protective eye wear. For sports that require headgear or protective goggles, contact lenses don’t interfere with the fit or comfort of these protective eye wear devices.
- Better peripheral vision and field of view. Contact lenses provide an unobstructed field of view and excellent peripheral vision which are crucial in knowing where both your opponents and team players are without looking in their direction. For example, a point guard can pass the basketball to a team mate on the right side while looking straight ahead.
- No fogging up or rain drops on lenses. Unlike eyeglasses, contacts remain clear regardless of environment or weather conditions such as rain or humidity.
- Less chance of injury. Eyeglasses may break and cause an eye injury if you take a hard hit, but contact lenses won’t.
- Stable vision. With contact lenses, you don’t need to worry about eyeglasses sliding down your nose or falling off. Also, running causes the eyeglasses to move up and down on the nose with each stride creating visual disturbance.
We recommend one-time wear daily disposable contact lenses for health, vision, convenience and comfort reasons. Come and visit us today if you need contacts! Schedule your eye exam today.
